Abide: Before the Fruit Comes the Root

Cozy reading nook with chair, book, ivy, and sunlit window

The fruit of the Spirit is not something we manufacture through effort, but something the Spirit forms within us over time.

Before love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, or self-control, there is an invitation that comes first: remain.

Abide.

Stay connected to the One who produces the fruit in the first place.

Reflection

In a world that constantly pushes us toward hurry, performance, and self-sufficiency, Jesus offers a different way of living; one marked by dependence, surrender, and transformation through the Holy Spirit.

Before we explore each attribute of the Fruit of the Spirit, we have to start with the primary invitation at the center of it all: abide in Christ.

In John 15, Jesus describes Himself as the vine and us as the branches, reminding us that the most fruitful life is not found in striving harder, but in staying constantly connected to Him.

We produce what we are connected to, and lasting spiritual fruit can only grow from lives rooted in the presence of the Spirit through the life of Jesus.

What I Know Now

When I first wrote these words, I was thinking about the Fruit of the Spirit. I don’t think I fully realized how much God was teaching me about something even deeper: where fruit actually comes from.

I have spent a lot of my life doing. Working. Leading. Serving. Parenting. Loving people. Trying to do things well and, if I am being truthful, sometimes measuring faithfulness by how much I could carry. But abiding has been teaching me that God never asked me to manufacture what only His Spirit can produce.

He asked me to stay close.

And I am beginning to understand that abiding does not always look like the quiet, perfectly still spiritual moment I once imagined. Sometimes it happens on the drive to work. In the middle of motherhood. In a conversation I did not plan to have. In the few minutes I choose prayer instead of filling the silence. In showing up faithfully to the place God has already put me.

Maybe that is part of the sacred grace hidden in ordinary life. We don’t have to escape our everyday spaces to remain in Him. We can meet Him there.

And when we do, something begins to grow.

Not because we tried harder.

Because we stayed closer.

The Word

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.”
— John 15:4

A Prayer to Abide

Holy Spirit, teach us to be aware of Your guiding and mindful of the influences that try to pull us away from You. Help us to abide in Jesus each day, remaining rooted in His love and trusting Him as our source of strength. As we read Scripture and pray, teach us how to live well toward ourselves and others. Draw us closer to You, deepen our relationship with You, and let Your Spirit produce lasting fruit in our lives. Thank You for Your unfailing love.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Worship With Me

Holy Spirit – Jesus Culture

An invitation to slow down, become aware of His presence, and abide.

Gratitude – Brandon Lake

A reminder that worship begins with what we already have to bring Him.

From the archives: This reflection was originally written as Week One of a Fruit of the Spirit series I shared within a faith community at work. Looking back, I can see God was already teaching me something that would eventually become part of Everyday Spaces, Sacred Graces: His presence was never limited to the places I expected to find Him.
